Mini Mal Cosplay — I’ve always liked dressing up, and have been ‘officially’ cosplaying since 2008. I attended my first convention in 2010. I am a short statured individual, and I have found that my dwarfism has lent well to cosplaying short characters, like Edward Elric, Wicket the Ewok, and Tyrion Lannister. However, that hasn’t stopped me from cosplaying characters of all heights. At a convention, I went as Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly, during which someone called out, “Hey, it’s a mini Mal!” and for some reason that stuck with me, and that became my cosplay name. I originally made my page so that people who want to check out my cosplays can find them all in one spot. Now I have followers from all over the world! I still can’t believe it.
I hand make or alter most of my cosplays myself, though some of the harder things have been made by others. Thrift stores are a magical place. I am able to piece a lot of my cosplays together by finding different items and altering them. Other things I enjoy are crafting and photo editing. I like to make a lot of props for my cosplays such as my Gimli helmet and Hawkeye quiver. I also make props for other people. I do a lot of photo edits of my cosplays as well. You can see some of my work on Mini Mal FX on Facebook!
I love cosplaying short characters, and I have found that they’re the ones that excite people the most. Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit, Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones, Gimli the Dwarf from Lord of the Rings, and more. I really love seeing people’s reactions to my cosplays. Kids enjoy when I wear my Minion from Despicable Me, Sandy the Sandman from Rise of the Guardians, or my newest, Wicket the Ewok from Star Wars.
